I am half Cambodia and half Chinese, but I can’t speak either languages and for that matter my english may sometimes suck too.
Both my parents wanted me to follow the traditional asian route. You know, the stereotypical business or medical field. Instead, I chose to major in art. …That was a fun conversation I had with them.
So a few years and butt load of coffee later, here I am. A graphic designer with a bachelor degree, that surprisingly I didn’t need since I learned everything online.
I spent the first year in the entertainment business working as a production designer. I spent my days masking out stuff, photo-retouching and packaging files. Meeting new and experienced designers in the business has taught me more than what college could and throughout different companies my skills have grown. Eventually I expanded my medium to photography, and I’m in the process of learning film and video editing. From entertainment to corporate, I’ve work on a multitude of projects; ranging from digital, print, web and video. I even got a few of my artworks published on Creative Photoshop Magazine.
I started as late bloomer in the business. I began this career when I was 25. I’ve met with a lot of talents and insane creative artists, some of which are too damn young to drink. This career can be very intimating and sometimes it can be discouraging. However, through every obstacles and challenges I find something new to explore. Learning new tools and new ways to create something beyond what I was called for is very exhilarating.
What was once considered a hobby or doodling or day dreaming has become my career. You don’t get creative without day dreaming, you don’t perfect your skills without practice and you don’t quit if you find pleasure in what you do.
